If you’re in need of a fashion pick-me-up, you’re in luck—new Style Director Kate Powell is offering regular fashion advice on these pages and via personal styling appointments (in person and virtually) at Hudson Yards.
Kate, who dresses everyone from celebrities to Fortune 500 CEOs to stay-at-home moms to the Hudson Yards Ambassadors, loves helping people feel great in their clothes (she got her start working on TLC’s What Not to Wear!), and can’t wait to do the same for you. She’ll do that whether you’re working with her one-on-one or reading her unique take on fashion and beauty, not to mention her favorite Hudson Yards finds. If you do meet up with Kate for personal styling—and appointments are available to all— you get to spend the rest of the day showing it off at Hudson Yards. “It’s a really luxurious experience—one-stop shopping. You don’t have to schlep all your goodies through the city.” Get to know Kate and what she does, and look for her upcoming style insights for Hudson Yards.
Her philosophy:
“Being seen is transformative, and claiming a personal style is a way to claim your own piece of the world. So don’t wait for a major life event; you don’t need some big excuse to feel good about yourself. You should feel amazing and go for it every day.”
Who she styles:
“I style everyone from senior-level finance people to a mom who hasn’t been out of sweats in five years. I have no agenda. You tell me how trendy or stylish you want to be and how much money you want to spend. I’m just excited to start helping you feel confident.“
Why she styles:
“I didn’t grow up in a fancy or particularly fashionable household, but we were always very into dressing up for occasions. It made me feel special and important and helped put me on my career path. Soon after I became a stylist, I ended up working on What Not To Wear and received the ultimate education in personal styling. Seeing how we changed the lives of the people we made over solidified my passion for personal styling.”
What to expect from an appointment with Kate:
“We’ll start with a phone or video consultation to help me get to know you and your style: what has and hasn’t worked in the past, your sizing, your goals and, of course, your budget. What’s great about Hudson Yards is that we can find great solutions no matter what you want to spend. There are beautiful things that are $30, and beautiful things that are $1,000, and they’re all under one roof.
Then we’ll meet in person. So we’re not wasting any time, you’ll arrive to find a dressing room full of clothes to try on. As you do that we’ll have a discussion—how do the pieces make you feel, are you ready to try something out of your comfort zone? You’ll decide which items you want to purchase. When you’re done, because you’re at Hudson Yards, you can extend the me-day by grabbing some lunch, climbing Vessel, people-watching in the Public Square and Gardens…. But if you have to get right back to work, don’t worry; we’ll send the packages to your home. There’s no hassle for you!”
Is personal styling for you?
“Yes! It’s for everyone! Men and women of all ages. People who are new in their careers and looking to get noticed and people who’ve worked so hard to get where they are and want to look the part. People who don’t like to shop, because I make sure it is not a frustrating experience, and people who love fashion, because I’m a subjective voice who can tell good investment from the piece to pass up. Whoever you are, if you spend three hours with me, I’ll set you up for the whole season.”

How to maximize your time with Kate:
“In our initial conversation, be realistic and honest about sizing and how you feel about your body. If, say, you don’t like your stomach, tell me; the magic of clothing can help. And here’s a nitty-gritty bit of advice: Wear foundational garments you don’t mind me seeing, because I’m going to be throwing lots of clothes at you to try on to maximize our time together.”
Finally, for a preview of the style advice you’ll read from Kate, some thoughts on how to dress for the current moment:
“We’re figuring out a new normal. If you haven't been wearing your good pieces, it’s time to bring them out again. Clothes have the power to transform moods and control how powerful you feel and we can all use some of that. Also, I’ve been suggesting to clients that they pay particular attention to earrings and sleeves. They both make strong impressions on Zoom, and these days it’s all about that. In any case, we need to get excited about getting dressed again.”
