Kate Powell’s Tips for Happy—and Stylish—Holiday Traditions
This year, Hudson Yards’ Style Director is making her outfits—and home—extra festive.
I have to admit, I’m crazy about the holidays. When people complain about the crowds, the music, the family dynamics... well, I just nod and smile while secretly repeating lines from Elf in my head. I had my Christmas lights up the week before Thanksgiving and I make no apologies!
This year the Holidays will be different. Full stop. I have made my peace with it and find no reason why they can’t continue to be magical and fashionable and exciting. So, with that in mind here are my favorite holiday traditions and how to make them special no matter what this winter holds.
Shopping for Gifts
Of course, you won’t find me complaining about holiday shopping—it’s one of my favorite traditions—but I know that not everyone shares my joy. The good news is that Hudson Yards is making everyone’s life easy and festive this year with tons of incredible services. Most excitingly, you can have the personal styling team do the shopping for you! Just email us your list or let us know who the gift is for and how much you want to spend—we’ll send back some perfect options.
But there’s also a great reason to come by. Hudson Yards is so beautiful right now, even the most Scrooge-y among us will have to get into the spirit. So get out there and get your tiny feminist books at CAMP, find the most unique jewelry at The Conservatory and finish it off with a cup of hot chocolate from the Backyard Cafe before you head home, knowing that you supported New York City shops and got a dose of holiday cheer at the same time! Added bonus: many of the stores offer free gift wrapping and, if you have a Visa card, messengering the haul home, or a gift to a friend, is free!
Making your Home Festive
We’ve all been home a lot this year. So why not turn your place into a winter wonderland to help everyone feel revived and cozy for the holidays? I love decorating for Christmas and finding new items to add to my collection that I can use for years to come. To me, that means anything with sparkle—festive and bright are my guiding lights. I also want things that are timeless, because our tree is an eclectic mix of childhood ornaments and gorgeous pieces that I’ve picked up over time. One tip: scent is such a huge part of the tradition. All those fragrant candles and soaps evoke memories. This year, I searched all over and finally found the perfect options at Hudson Yards.

Sipping Mulled Wine (Under a Heat Lamp)
Getting together with friends may be a bit brisker these days but leave it to New Yorkers to power on and keep supporting their favorite restaurants with outdoor dining and drinks. My Swedish friend likes to remind me that there is no bad weather, only bad clothing choices. Even in more normal times, I tell my private styling clients that a coat is such an important part of the wardrobe since you wear it for six months—I suggest something that’s stylish and functional. So in honor of my friend, and the delicious mulled wine I enjoyed outside at the Backyard Cafe, here are some chic but really, really warm options.
Pieced Shearling Blouson
Coach
'Brushed Camo' puffer jacket

Enjoying a Holiday dinner at home
Even if it’s just your immediate family or small pod sitting down to a holiday feast this year, that’s no reason not to pull out all the stops. Getting dressed up changes your mood and the atmosphere. It’s a worthy pursuit no matter where you will be for the holidays because it makes you feel good about yourself. Maybe you’ll go all out and don this stunning shift dress, or treat yourself to a pretty shirt and statement earrings as a little holiday gift for yourself. However you plan to celebrate, I hope you’ll take my advice, put on a festive look and enjoy a healthy, wonderful holiday.
