Jennifer Prichard’s Blossoms Reflect the Resilience of New Yorkers
The artist’s ceramic flowers bring the outside into The Shops & Restaurants.
Having once lived here, Jennifer Prichard is quite familiar with New York’s unique energy. So when the ceramic installation artist—now a resident of Austin, Texas—was asked to contribute to HYxOffTheWall 2.0, it didn’t take long for a vision to take root. That vision, dozens of vibrant, pigmented porcelain in ochre, burnt orange, dusty reds and blues now covers a huge wall and wraps around a corner on Level 3 of The Shops. “The blossoms really take over the space,” says Prichard, explaining her intention. Here’s more about what drove her to create Whorl:
ON THE IDEA BEHIND HER PROJECT:
My artwork is always about beauty. This installation, in particular, is about bringing the beauty—and life—of the outdoors into the extraordinary indoor space of Hudson Yards.
ON CREATING THIS PROJECT FOR HUDSON YARDS:
I’m thrilled to be part of HYxOffTheWall. The space is amazing, and Hudson Yards gave me the freedom to do whatever I wanted.
ON HAVING HER WORK PUBLICLY DISPLAYED
It’s a huge honor to install my work at Hudson Yards, knowing that it will be seen by so many New Yorkers and—eventually—tourists from around the world. I can’t wait for them to see it!
ON MAKING ART IN NEW YORK RIGHT NOW
The piece is also about the energy and joy of New York, and the resilience and spirit of those who live here. As a one-time New Yorker this project is near to my heart.
