The Hudson Yards Style Director on the 2021 Fashion Trends
Kate Powell on the looks you will—and won’t!—want to wear this year
Since what you wear has the power to change how you feel, our wardrobes seem like an excellent way to welcome 2021 with a bright and hopeful energy. To that end, these are the trends you’ll see people sporting at fashionable spots like Hudson Yards—modelled by Hudson Yards ambassador Olivia —in the coming months.
In fact, that’s one of the great things about working as a personal stylist in the neighborhood—it’s such fun to watch the trendsetters parading about. So slip on a floral frock or some knits and loafers, head to the Backyard Cafe for a mulled wine and be part of the best of Hudson Yards’ street style scene.

Knit sets
If you’re ready to get out of your sweats (or pjs!) but still attached to the idea of comfort, 2021 is coming through for you in the form of sophisticated knit sets. These luxe pieces are the perfect way to transition from the work-from-home pandemic life to the post-vaccine future when we can really be out and about again (hooray!). To up your style game, look for monochromatic, neutral sets and avoid sweatsuit materials like terry cloth and cotton jerseys.

Serious pants with volume
One thing we learned from 2020’s obsession with sourdough bread baking—skinny pants have their drawbacks. Happily, the current pant silhouette eschews tight and stretchy in favor of voluminous, pleated, and pretty. Think of it as a cross between Katheirne Hepburn and nineties style. These pants are the perfect solution for anyone who wants to get out of yoga pants but isn’t quite ready to put on those high-waisted jeans. Wear it with a slouchy sweater tucked in the front or a flossy top (see below). Once again, comfort and chic for the win.

Floss
This look trickled up from the bikini-top streetwear looks of influencers and models. For the rest of us, thin, strappy accents offer the perfect hint of skin without having a live-in personal trainer. Go for a corset effect or super-skinny straps formed from a common thread. And while at first you might wear it with those super wide leg pants, in warmer months look for it as a pretty feature on dresses.

Preppy flats—and socks
Once again, 2021 delivers for anyone who wants more style without losing the comfort—in this case, for our feet. Loafers with tassels or a spot for pennies are the ultimate compromise between flats and fashion. You can take the look in two directions: go classic and it’s a throwback to traditional preppy days or choose a pair with big soles and adornments like studs or pearls as a nod to the nineties. Wear them with a bare ankle or, for added chic, a fun pair of socks with stripes or a pattern. This mini-trend was seen in campaign shoots last year but then we all ended up in quarantine, so now is your chance to play around with it.

Flower power
Speaking of dresses, 2021 is bringing them back into our everyday wardrobe. This time, floral garbs take their inspiration from vintage nightgowns—aka a “nap dress.” Choose one with a puffed, billowy sleeve or a long, flowy skirt. The overall vibe is casual and feminine, so that it looks equally great around the house with bare feet or out running errands. Pajamas masquerading as dresses? 2021, you really are a brighter year!
