Most of us have been staying put for more than a month now, which means any beauty treatments we managed to fit in before are getting old—even for the experts. “All the memes on social media that were funny a few weeks back are getting a little too real,” says Jennifer June. “I resemble them more than I’d have thought possible: gray roots, frizzy hair, overgrown eyebrows—who am I?”
Well, Jennifer is the CEO of Dreamdry and BLVD, the salon inside Neiman Marcus at Hudson Yards, and she has had enough. Deciding it’s time for some personal upkeep, she is turning her "isolation blues" into "isolation dos.” To help you do the same, here are her tips for taking care of your hair when the salon is not an option.
1. Ease Up on the Washing
“This is easier said than done, considering our current situation. But really, you should try to wash your hair every other day or wait even longer if you can. This gives it time to rest and let the natural oils do their work.”
2. Try a DIY Treatment
“My favorite is banana, honey and olive oil; just mash them up and let that sit on your head for 10 to 20 minutes. You can find tons of other recipes online depending on your hair type, too. Chances are, you’ve got what you need lying around your house to give your hair a little treat.”
3. Avoid the Towel
“Towels are harsh, and they can cause hair breakage. Using anything gentler than a towel will help protect your locks. The DreamDry Dream Turban is my personal favorite. It offers hair some relief while keeping it out of your way.”
4. Stay Cool
“Now is the perfect opportunity to give your dryer, flat iron or curling iron a break. These tools damage hair, causing it to split. I understand that if you’re trying to maintain a certain look you may not be able to avoid them completely, but at least try to use them less than usual. For example, my hair is curly. These days, I let it air dry, then touch it up with the iron.”
