Artful Days - and Nights - in the Chelsea Neighborhood

Treats for the eyes and taste buds, from Hudson Yards to High Line Nine

Art is an essential piece of the Hudson Yards experience, not least because it sits so close to Chelsea’s galleries. Outside, find Xenobia Bailey’s glass mosaic, Funktional Vibrations, which welcomes you to the new 7 train station and Vessel, the city’s immediately beloved interactive installation in the Public Square and Gardens. Inside The Shops & Restaurants, HYxOffTheWall works by local artists delight and amuse, and there are the world-class pieces at Neiman Marcus by Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, and Bill Cunnningham. In fact, Hudson Yards is its very own self-contained art walk.

But if you have a little time, consider heading south to High Line Nine, an evolving collective of domestic and international galleries that sits below the High Line on 27th Street. The current show, ME, explores the history of the self-portrait, from antiquity through the selfie era. On February 5, a new exhibit, New York's Edge,  will feature the winners of a photo contest sponsored by 30 Hudson Yards’ soon-to-debut outdoor observation deck, Edge. The 10 images, chosen for their creativity, composition, and sense of place, celebrate the view looking up in anticipation of the city’s newest landmark.

And if all this gazing makes you feel like grazing, you can pop into High Line Nine’s own eatery, Il Piccolo Ristoro. Or join the cafe and wine bar for Wednesday Jazz Nights, and DJs every Friday. For a unique winter activity, call and reserve space in the garden’s pop-up igloo bubble, complete with a special cheese fondue menu.
